Hollis Kelley's Putting Exercises

When warming up, don't forget about the putting green!

Far too often, I see golfers rushing to hit a large bucket before teeing off, neglecting the putting green before they play a round. Now ask yourself this question:

During your best rounds, what part of your game stands out? The answer probably is putting!!! So make sure, before you head to the first tee, to spend some time on the green. Here are two exercises that will help you putt better.

1. Lag Putting:

Use three balls and putt from one side of the green to the other. Try to stop the ball as close to the collar as possible. This will give you a feel for the speed of the greens -- crucial to good putting.

Attempt to putt each ball to the edge of the green,
concentrating on the speed.
Set up on one side of the putting green and
take aim at the other side instead of a hole.

2. Ten in a Row:

The key to this drill is to be able to see the hole in your peripheral vision, that way you are not tempted to look up to see the ball go in the hole. About a foot and a half should do. Make sure to take your time while attempting to make ten in a row. Two benefits come from this drill:

- Hearing the ball go in will help your confidence.
- Putting at such a short distance should help your alignment.

Set up close to a hole, mark the spot with a tee.
Make ten in a row before heading to the first tee.

If you implement these easy exercises in your pre-round routine, better scores are soon to follow.
